The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced on Wednesday that last year was the safest year on record for commercial air travel, despite a massive recovery in passenger flights.

According to the IATA’s annual report, the only fatal accident recorded involving a civilian aircraft was the crash of an ATR of Nepal’s Yeti Airlines during a domestic flight, killing 72 people.

IATA counted 29 other accidents in 2023, none of which resulted in deaths or loss of the aircraft.

In 2022, there were a total of 42 accidents, five of which were fatal and claimed 158 lives.

The International Air Transport Association considers an accident non-catastrophic when it causes damage of at least $1 million or 10% of the value of the aircraft.

IATA statistics do not cover commercial, military, private, maintenance or training flights.

“2023 saw the lowest mortality risk and accident rate ever.”
