As part of its participation in the Arab Health Exhibition under the unified theme “Health of the Emirates,” Dr. Asmaa Al Mannaei, the CEO of the Research and Innovation Center at the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, affirmed that the “Emirati Genome” program aims to collect one million samples from Emiratis in the coming years. The project has already registered data from half a million samples, benefiting 250 Emiratis and their families, all of whom are cancer patients. The program supports predictive capabilities for genetic and chronic diseases, aims to prevent them, and works on treatments for current and future generations.
Dr. Al Mannaei highlighted that the program includes 850 rare genetic diseases, and an optional genetic test has been integrated into the pre-marital screening program in Abu Dhabi. This step falls within the framework of preventive measures implemented by the department to protect the community’s well-being. The genetic test is expected to cover 570 medical conditions, identifying carriers of genetic diseases for those planning to marry, revealing the potential transmission of any inherited and chronic diseases to their offspring, and providing advanced fertility solutions and other treatment options for couples.
Dr. Al Mannaei emphasized that pre-marital screening is essential in the UAE, and this new initiative aims to expand the scope of genetic tests as part of the continuous improvement and expansion of screening programs led by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center. The program serves the community voluntarily, with couples seeking consultation independently. The initiative is in the interest of future generations, allowing new couples to identify genes causing diseases that their children may carry in the future. This contributes to building a healthier and safer society, reducing the burden on families and the healthcare sector. The program operates according to ethical and administrative standards to ensure the confidentiality of participants’ data and preserve their privacy. Participation in the program will enhance the health of participants and their families, contributing to the development of the personalized and preventive healthcare system in the UAE.
