Local plants are a key component of the local environmental biodiversity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Therefore, the UAE prioritizes the utmost protection of these plants, cultivating various species. Additionally, there is a focus on raising awareness across all segments of society about the importance of sustaining plant cover, conserving local plants in their natural habitats, and promoting their use in afforestation projects.

Local plants in the UAE are considered one of the most important treasures of nature due to their ability to withstand the hot desert climatic conditions. They possess unique characteristics that distinguish them from other plants, including resistance to diseases and agricultural pests, contributing to sustainability in the desert ecosystem.

Based on the National Red List project, 598 local vascular plant species were assessed, with 8% of them facing the threat of extinction. The UAE authorities are committed to caring for these plants through various programs and initiatives to enhance their protection. This includes conducting experiments for seedling regeneration, extracting seeds suitable for the environment, establishing specialized scientific centers for seed multiplication, and creating genetic banks specialized in preserving genetic assets. Furthermore, providing genetic material and necessary information for various breeding programs and exchanging information on genetic resources with local and international gene banks are essential components of these efforts.

The “Sustainability Nation” campaign, launched recently in conjunction with the Year of Sustainability, highlights the UAE’s initiatives in preserving local plants. The campaign dedicates a special axis to “Environmental Protection” to shed light on national success stories in environmental conservation and biodiversity.

The “Sustainability Nation” campaign aims to raise awareness about environmental sustainability issues, encourage community participation, and support national strategies related to climate action. This is aimed at achieving a positive impact on individuals’ behaviors and responsibilities, leading to an environmentally conscious society.

The UAE has made significant strides in protecting habitats and preserving local plants by enacting a package of laws and legislation, including Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 regarding the protection and development of the environment and its amendments. Additionally, Cabinet Resolution No. 18 of 2018 on the cultivation of local plants and nature conservation aims to enhance community participation in improving the environment, conserving biodiversity, and developing natural habitats for local plants in the country.
