Government officials unveiled the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, aiming to enhance the technological skills of the workforce through extensive educational initiatives.
The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 outlines a robust plan for equipping the workforce with advanced AI skills, enabling them to navigate the evolving technological landscape. One pivotal aspect of this initiative is to enhance the skills of citizens to deepen the talent pool for leading AI companies. The government plans to establish specialized research and training centers and facilitate international study tours for promising machine learning students.
As part of concerted efforts, the UAE plans to increase the number of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in its universities. The government emphasizes a direct relationship between STEM education and an increase in talent pools in the AI field in the country. The targeted policy aims to transition one-third of STEM graduates into jobs in the field of artificial intelligence.
Previous educational efforts in the field of AI have shown promising results. Through the implementation of free AI courses and the National AI Program in collaboration with the University of Oxford, approximately 52% of employees improved their AI skills. Over 20 universities have offered AI courses, and institutions like Mohammed bin Zayed University provide scholarships for promising students.
Government educational plans extend beyond officials to include private sector employees. Despite concerns about the potential replacement of entry-level jobs by AI models, government officials downplay the threat, emphasizing that skill improvement will lead to new roles with enhanced overall productivity. More than 70% of CEOs in the UAE affirm the presence of long-term AI strategies in their organizations.
To achieve its goals, the UAE has started introducing artificial intelligence into primary and secondary schools nationwide. While details are currently limited, education officials are expected to adhere to the roadmap presented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding the use of artificial intelligence in classrooms.
