The mangrove and ghaf trees hold a special place among Emiratis due to their environmental value and multiple benefits, intertwined with the country’s identity and heritage.

These two tree species’ forests have become a destination for local and international visitors, providing a unique tourism experience. This is especially emphasized during the third edition of the “Most Beautiful Winter in the World” campaign, aiming to highlight the UAE’s heritage, identity, and the enduring system of authentic values passed down through generations.

The ghaf tree, declared the national tree of the UAE in 2008, occupies a significant place in Emirati heritage. Its remarkable ability to adapt to the harsh desert environment makes it a symbol of resilience, staying green even in arid conditions. The ghaf tree holds importance for humans, animals, and environmental balance.

The ghaf tree gains its moral and national value as a gathering place for consultations since ancient times. It traditionally served as a meeting point for tribal leaders in the evening, where elders discussed important matters. This tradition reflects the ghaf tree’s role as a forum for tribal members and neighboring tribes, welcoming everyone, even passing travelers, to join in discussions around the fire, accompanied by coffee and dates.

In 2019, the ghaf tree was chosen as a symbol of tolerance during the Year of Tolerance in the UAE. These trees have also spread throughout the Expo 2020 Dubai site, telling a story of sustainability and spreading the spirit of tolerance across the participating pavilions.
